چکیده

Propensity scores are increasingly being used in large sample studies to control for pregroup differences. Because these scores are often used to match cases, they can result in sample attrition. In smaller sample studies, such attrition leaves too few cases for meaningful analysis. Alternatives when working with small samples are to use propensity scores as covariates to control for pre-group differences and to use propensities as weights in weighted regression. The use of propensity scores with small samples is compared with the alternative of using baseline measures to control for pre-group differences. The paper also presents a procedure for empirically testing whether construct integrity holds. We use data from a dosage specific study of substance abusing families receiving clinical services and coordinated case management. Program outcomes are examined, comparing the use of propensity scores with the use of time one measures alone. Results show that propensities can be used as covariates or as weights in small samples and produce more reliable results than matching procedures. Using time one measures as a control produces nearly as good results.

استفاده از Propensity Score برای همسان سازی نمونه ها در یک مطالعه مورد شاهدی

Background and Aim: Case-Control studies provide evidence in the area of health. Validity and accuracy of such studies depend to a large extent on the similarity (similar distributions) of the case and control groups according to confounding variables. Matching is a method for controlling or eliminating the effects of important confounders. Matching using propensity score has recently been intr...

A Note on Adapting Propensity Score Matching and Selection Models to Choice Based Samples.

A Note on Adapting Propensity Score Matching and Selection Models to Choice Based Samples The probability of selection into treatment plays an important role in matching and selection models. However, this probability can often not be consistently estimated, because of choicebased sampling designs with unknown sampling weights. This note establishes that the selection and matching procedures ca...

Selection Bias in Web Surveys and the Use of Propensity Scores

Web surveys have several advantages compared to more traditional surveys with in-person interviews, telephone interviews, or mail surveys. Their most obvious potential drawback is that they may not be representative of the population of interest because the sub-population with access to Internet is quite specific. This paper investigates propensity scores as a method for dealing with selection ...

Defining the Study Population for an Observational Study to Ensure Sufficient Overlap: A Tree Approach

The internal validity of an observational study is enhanced by only comparing sets of treated and control subjects which have sufficient overlap in their covariate distributions. Methods have been developed for defining the study population using propensity scores to ensure sufficient overlap. However, a study population defined by propensity scores is difficult for other investigators to under...

Comparing Propensity Score Methods in Balancing Covariates and Recovering Impact in Small Sample Educational Program Evaluations - Practical Assessment, Research & Evaluation

Propensity score applications are often used to evaluate educational program impact. However, various options are available to estimate both propensity scores and construct comparison groups. This study used a student achievement dataset with commonly available covariates to compare different propensity scoring estimation methods (logistic regression, boosted regression, and Bayesian logistic r...
